Set Your WordPress Typography with Easy Google Fonts

Today I want to show off one of our favorite plugins here at WPShout. It’s all about making your site look great by giving you the right font, or if you’re fancy “typeface.” (I say that somewhat jokingly aware that there’s a distinction and that people care, but a little too far out of my depth to make the real distinction 🤪) Anyway the fun and useful typography plugin we’re showing off today if the WordPress plugin called “Easy Google Fonts.”

Here’s the video where I show off the basics, if you’re ready to learn who to use cool fonts for free on your WordPress site.

And if it’s more your speed, we also have text…

How to Use Free Fonts for WordPress with Easy Google Fonts

Ok, you know that you need a cool webfont, but you’re not sure how to get it. That’s where the Easy Google Fonts WordPress plugin comes in. Here’s how to use it to set up new fonts on your WordPress site:

  1. Go to “Plugins > Add New” on your WordPress site. On that screen you’ll do a search for the plugin by typing “easy google fonts” into the search box at the top right.
  2. When it finds the Easy Google Fonts plugin by Titanium Themes, you’ll want to click “Install” on that plugin. Once it has installed, the plugin’s button will become the “Activate” button—click to Activate the plugin as well. Then you’ve installed the plugin and are ready to start customizing the font-face (aka font-family) you’re using on your WordPress site.
  3. The easiest place to change the font in your WordPress site is the Customizer. You may already know, but there are lots of different ways to activate the WordPress Customizer, but for now we’ll just find it by clicking on “Appearance > Customize” from the admin-screen of your WordPress site.
  4. Within the Customizer, if you’ve installed and activated the Easy Google Fonts plugin, you’ll see a “Typography” top level menu item. Under that, you’ll find a “Default Typography” menu, which will let us set up values for <p>, <h1>, <h2>, etc WordPress body and heading levels. This will be enough for most basic font customization. The video goes into a bit more detail about what to do if that’s not enough. But you’ll mostly set fonts by simply selecting the “Font Family” dropdown, and picking one of the literally hundreds of great free Google Fonts.
  5. Once you’ve found a font you like, you’ll “lock-in” your settings by clicking the “Publish” button on the top-right on the left-side Customizer panel.

And once you’ve done that, all your visitors will see your cool Google Fonts on your WordPress blog. And all at no cost to you. Pretty pretty rad!

Yay! 🎉 You made it to the end of the article!
