10 Largest Web Hosting Companies on the Market (Based on Data From 4 Independent Sources)

Sometimes it pays to go in the direction that the river is flowing. When it comes to web hosting, knowing who the largest web hosting companies are can provide a useful window unto what the overall market thinks are the best ones to go with.

At the very least, it can serve as a starting point for decision making. Unfortunately, despite its usefulness, this type of data isn’t readily available “just like that.” So, we decided to do some digging on our own. The result of that digging is the list of the largest web hosting companies in the world that you have before you.

We’ll share the data in a moment, but beyond showing you how each host ranks against the rest, we’ll also give you a brief introduction and list some of the features that might help explain why each host is so popular.

Web hosting must-know:

⚠️ A quick note – we’re going to focus on consumer-facing companies, rather than cloud hosting providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud. If you looked at the actual hardware, these would be the largest web hosting companies, but most regular webmasters don’t have the technical skills to just start using cloud hosting directly.

Additionally, many distinct hosting services use cloud infrastructure, which muddies the waters. For example, SiteGround, Kinsta, and Flywheel all use Google Cloud infrastructure, so it’s not really fair to attribute those customers to Google Cloud when, for all intents and purposes, they’re hosting at SiteGround, Kinsta, etc.

🖥️ The largest web hosting companies: IN DETAIL

Let’s take a deep look at the hosts. For each host, I’ll share:

  • Its rankings against other hosts
  • Its market share
  • Key details about the hosting plans and features

One more quick note; the rankings that we’ve included in the tables take into account infrastructure-focused cloud hosting companies, which we’ve excluded for the reasons that we already mentioned.

Basically, a host that ranks “fifth” in Datanyze still might be the second most popular consumer-facing hosting company, as is the case with 1 & 1 (Ionos) below.

📊 Where we got the web hosting market share data:

To come up with a list of these most popular and largest web hosting companies, we looked at four distinct data sources:

These sites work by crawling a representative sample of the web and using that to determine market share. It’s…not perfect. But by aggregating separate sources together, we can get a pretty good idea of the relative popularity of each host.

Also, all data references to user ratings and support ratings are based on our annual hosting survey and ratings from Trustpilot.

Here are the aggregate numbers of  all the hosts charted  (this is an estimate):
