Everything You Need to Know About WordPress Affiliate Programs – 30+ Affiliate Programs for WordPress, and How to Promote Them

Affiliate programs are some of the most popular online marketing tools, and the same is true for WordPress affiliate programs: product creators can get free initial advertising and pay out only on performance, while product promoters can get paid to recommend great products.

WordPress affiliate programs work very simply: you promote products on your blog, social media, or email list using a unique link, and if readers click on your link and buy the product within a certain number of days (typically 30 to 60), you get a percentage share of the revenue.

The WordPress ecosystem has no shortage of great WordPress affiliate programs, but this world can be difficult to navigate, the ethics unclear, and the whole setup is uncomfortable for some. How do you find the best proven WordPress affiliate programs, and the best ways of managing and promoting them?

We showed you how to monetize a blog in a previous article and this post will lift back the curtain on affiliate marketing. We’ll first look at the semantics of affiliate programs and then discuss how you should choose which products to promote and the most effective promotion methods. Finally, we’ll look at some of the best programs to join. By the end of this post, you’ll have a clear understanding of how the best WordPress affiliate programs work – and how you can take advantage of them.

We’ve even included some performance notes from our experience with these affiliate programs. Although we can’t hand out our data for privacy reasons, we’re happy to share which affiliate programs are our top performers, so keep an eye out for those!

How should you approach promoting WordPress affiliate programs?

Let’s first look at how this is going to work in practice for you. In other words, once you choose the WordPress affiliate programs you want to promote, how should you go about doing the promotion?

We’ll assume you already have a blog and perhaps an email list and social media to support the blog. All of the content types fit nicely into this mould, regardless of the actual niche your blog sits in. Let’s first look at some general rules for creating blog posts that aim to promote WordPress affiliate programs:

  • High-quality content is the most important thing: you must always follow the rules for well-researched, well-written, and well-formatted blog posts. This means using and spending time with the product you’re promoting. It should be immediately clear to the reader that you are an authority on the product and topic at hand.
  • Promotional content must be a good fit: any affiliate content needs to be in line with your usual content. Both your readers and Google will frown upon anything else. A post about SEO tools would look out of place on your philosophy blog, and the same applies to WordPress products. Only promote products that are a good fit.
  • Tailor the content to your audience: think about how you can best relate the products you’re promoting to the topic of your blog and the interests of the people who read it. For example, if a food blog wanted to promote WordPress themes, you could write “How to Start a Food Blog” and include theme details – rather than just publishing “10 Best WordPress Themes for 2018”.
  • Take SEO seriously: you don’t have to get too deep into the weeds on this. Just make sure you’ve done your due diligence on SEO research. This involves finding relevant keywords your blog post can target (use this tool to help), following SEO best practices when writing, and tracking your rankings once the post has been published. While you’re writing the post, it can also be helpful to think about what questions the reader would be asking and try to answer them. You don’t have to become an expert, but make sure you do the basics right.

These general rules will make sure your affiliate promotional content is both well suited to your blog and audience, and that it’s actually effective. Effectiveness is, after all, very important here: a downside of WordPress affiliate programs is that all the risk is transferred onto you and if you don’t make any sales you’re not going to make a return or even cover the cost of your time.

With the general rules for affiliate content creation covered, let’s now look at the four types of posts you can create in order to promote WordPress affiliate programs:

Product reviews:

These are in-depth reviews of the product you’re promoting. What are the pros and cons of the product? How does it work in practice? What have you been able to do with the product? Answer these questions, include some screenshots, and you’ll have a review that’s useful to readers.

Roundups of a category of products:

These are highly effective affiliate posts, as they allow you to include multiple products in a single post. You should include plenty of screenshots and a short description of each product.

Behind-the-scenes posts of your blog:

Humans are curious creatures, and “behind the scenes” posts of how you’re running your blog are fantastic tools for fulfilling that curiosity – and promoting products you use on your site.

Recommendations in your usual posts:

This final one is great for those looking for more subtle ways to promote WordPress affiliate programs, but it’s likely to be less effective as a result. These recommendations will work best when the product is relevant to the topic at hand.

With these guidelines in place, it’s really just a case of cracking on and creating the quality content that will get your affiliate links in front of people! Let’s now look at the murky aspects of affiliate marketing that can hold people back – and how they can be reconciled.

Affiliate ethics and disclosures

You will need to make an important decision when deciding which products to promote: do you promote products you personally use or do you promote products with the highest commissions? This is a key dilemma in affiliate marketing and something which, when unsolved, puts a lot of people off taking advantage of the revenue stream.

These are, however, very much solvable problems. If authenticity is extremely important to you, then only promote products which you use and would recommend even without the affiliate link. If your authenticity is important to you but you want to make some money, consider switching to the products you’re planning to promote.

On the other hand, if you want to err on the side of money, then go for the products with the highest commissions. Do whatever you’re comfortable with.

It’s also very important to think about disclosure. Guidelines from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) state you must clearly disclose your affiliate relationships on your blog in a way which can be easily noticed by readers. This means you need to make it very clear to readers from the outset that if they click on the links in your post and make a purchase, you’ll get a commission.

Note that having the disclosure after the post or on a separate page is considered inadequate; your disclosure must be clear and available before a reader starts looking at the post. The FTC guidelines apply to all websites promoting to US citizens – so if your site has US readers (it almost certainly does) you should comply.

Finally, a note about product reviews: these should be done honestly, thoroughly, and fairly for products you’ve personally used and without the affiliate commission in mind when writing. Focus on the product review, and not the affiliate commission. Gushing about a poor quality product that your readers buy on the basis of your recommendation will hurt trust between you and your readers. While in the short-term you may lose out on commissions, readers will know that when you do recommend a product it must be good and you can be trusted.

Bonus: WordPress plugins to help manage your affiliate promotions

Here’s a useful takeaway WordPress tip to help you manage your WordPress affiliate programs: use a plugin such as Thirsty Affiliates to standardize your affiliate links so they appear as yoursite.com/go/product/ or yoursite.com/recommends/product/.

Not only do these look more professional and percent your posts from being filled with unsightly unique affiliate URLs, but these can also be changed later.

This last point is important as this gives you easy flexibility: if you no longer want to use the affiliate URL, the program is discontinued or the program switches providers and thus changes its URLs, you’ll only have one link to update.

Final thoughts 🏁

And that concludes our in-depth look at the world of affiliate marketing in the WordPress ecosystem.

You’re now well equipped to choose from the best proven WordPress affiliate programs, create the content which will resonate with your audience and search engines, and start earning commissions!

Affiliate marketing can be an immensely helpful passive revenue generator for your business alongside your regular content. Doing your research can really (literally!) pay off when you promote and speak with authority on the WordPress products you use regularly.

We know that’s probably a lot to take in, but we’re here to help.

If we had to point you in the direction of just three top affiliate programs for WordPress, we would recommend:

Elegant Themes

By far our top-converting affiliate program, Elegant Themes is the best program for premium WordPress themes. It comes with a nice sweetener, too: our data shows that over half of our referrals go on to renew their memberships, and Elegant Themes pays out the same rate on renewals.

ThemeIsle

This one might look a little biased, but this recommendation is based on cold, hard data we’ve compiled. This is proven to be the best affiliate program for freemium themes.

SiteGround

Hosting providers tend to pay generously, and SiteGround consistently earns us our biggest affiliate cheques from the hosting world. Bluehost is another strong performer.

Of course, your experiences may differ from ours, so test out a variety of options to see what works best on your site. Just make sure you’ve tested the product extensively before you endorse it!

Today’s list is by no means exhaustive. If you’d like to recommend an affiliate program, you can do so in the comments below. We’d also love to hear your thoughts on any of the affiliate programs for WordPress featured today!

Hi, this is a really useful article for affiliate marketers. Thanks for including weDevs in this list. However, I could find a small error in the information given here. We provide 20% commission to our affiliates, not 30%. Could you kindly make the correction?
Cheers!
