WP File Manager Plugin: In-a-Pinch Substitute for FTP Credentials

wp file manager | wordpress file and folder management

We live in an imperfect world: we park on driveways and drive on parkways, buy hotdogs in sixes and buns in eights, and sometimes we don’t have the client’s FTP credentials.

WP File Manager can help. If you need to do something quick like download a plugin folder, WP File Manager present a file management interface directly in the WordPress dashboard.

You can even edit files directly, as you can in the Dashboard’s “Editor” views. The usual warnings there apply, though: if you edit a PHP file (likely a plugin file) that’s present everywhere, and introduce a fatal error into that file, you can completely take down your site, including the WordPress dashboard. You’ve now created a problem you can’t fix without FTP access. I made precisely this mistake on Friday, which was my dose of internal “are you in fact a WordPress professional?” for the weekend.

At any rate, it’s good to have file management from the WordPress admin in your toolkit, and hope you rarely have to use it.

Might be good to know that if there is a snippet in another plugin or in the theme that turns off the editor (define( 'DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT', true );), then this plugin doesn’t work.
