Discord: Heavily Branded But Cool Slack Alternative

There’s a good chance you know about Discord already. Especially if you’re one of the many n00bs I had to pwn in my long climb to Gold elo in League of Legends. (Hints: one-trick Xin Zhao, learn to farm the jungle efficiently, countergank top level 3.)

But it’s worth pointing out Discord as a good, always-free, group-voice-chat enabled alternative to the ultra-popular Slack service. If you can get past the heavily gamerish branding, you’ll find a service that works properly, and won’t punish you with $7 per user per month team fees if you want group voice calling or full chat archives.

I’m a big fan of Discord. Use it to voice chat while gaming and they recently added video conferencing. I’m connected to too many servers πŸ˜›

Good to hear about the video conferencing! We really are considering it for a project we’re working on because of how hard Slack fees hit when you transition from free.

      Cheers πŸ™‚
