One thing that I do on EVERY new WordPress install is configure my Permalinks under Settings=> Permalinks. I set the permalink structure to use a name instead of a number which is powerful for SEO and also looks more professional I think.

Can this be done on an old site without breaking existing links to the wp-content/uploads directory? Or does one need to move the current contents of wp-content/uploads to the new media directory?
